Erasing the Distance is a non-profit arts organization based in Chicago that uses the power of performance to disarm stigma, educate, spark dialogue, and promote healing surrounding mental health. Since 2005 the organization has been dedicated to creating a space for real people to share stories about their experiences navigating mental health. Through workshops, performances, and facilitated conversations, Erasing the Distance strives to generate insight and compassion, while helping people realize they are not alone.
I came in with my eyes and ears open.
I left with my heart open.

When someone decides they are ready to share their story a recording session is booked with one of our trained story collectors. During that private, one-on-one interview storytellers share however they would like for an average of 60-90 min, gently guided by an Erasing the Distance team member.
The interview is then transcribed word for word and shaped into a 10-minute monologue to be performed by professional actors. Each performance is followed by a moderated conversation exploring the themes, unpacking personal bias, and identifying potential recovery options.
